The median nurse practitioner salary is $132,300 a year, or $63.61 an hour, according to May 2025 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

That figure blends brand-new NPs with clinicians who have practiced for decades, and the two groups earn different amounts. On Payscale, NPs in their first year report average pay of about $101,000, while NPs with 10 to 19 years of experience report about $123,000.

Experience is only part of the picture, though. Where you practice moves NP pay even further, from a median of $105,750 in Alabama to $168,520 in California. And because a new NP often starts below what a senior RN earns, the first year in the role can bring a pay cut before the raises arrive.

Highest-Paying Metro Areas for NPs

San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California, is the top-paying metro area for NPs, with a median of $231,560 a year, or $111.33 an hour. The 17 highest-paying metros are all in California, and the first one outside the state is Kahului-Wailuku, Hawaii, at $164,210.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which pays more, PA or NP?

Physician assistants earn slightly more at the median, at $135,880 a year in May 2025 compared with $132,300 for NPs, a difference of $3,580, according to BLS. NP jobs are projected to grow faster, though, at 41% from 2025 to 2035 versus 21% for PAs.

How do you make $200,000 as an NP?

Earning $200,000 as an NP usually takes the right location more than extra years. Nationally, the top 10% earn more than $174,420, but California's 75th percentile is $209,350, and the San Francisco ($219,080) and San Jose ($231,560) medians are both above $200,000. Some recruited roles clear it too, with AMN Healthcare reporting NP offers as high as $342,000.

Is being an NP better than being an RN?

For long-term pay, yes. The NP median of $132,300 is $34,750 higher than the RN median of $97,550, based on BLS data for May 2025. The trade-off is a graduate degree, national certification, and a possible pay dip in your first NP job if you are leaving a well-paid RN position.

What type of NP gets paid the most?

Neonatal and psychiatric-mental health NPs reported the highest full-time median base salaries in AANP's 2024 compensation report, at $135,500 and $135,000, based on 2023 pay. Family NPs reported a median of $120,000 in the same survey, which is available through AANP's research reports.

Planning Your Nurse Practitioner Pay Over Time

NP pay rises fastest in the first few years and then levels off. Payscale's figures move from about $101,000 in the first year to about $123,000 for NPs with 10 to 19 years, while the gap between the lowest- and highest-paying states is more than $62,000. Where you practice, and in what specialty, often matters as much as how long you have practiced.

If you are leaving a well-paid RN job, it can make sense to treat your first NP position as training, especially one with close supervision or loan repayment, and then renegotiate or move after a year or two. That matches what NPs shared in the 2020 discussion above, and the pay data points the same way.
